What is TOEFL?
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is widely used by colleges and universities, scholarship agencies, and professional licensing organizations to assess English language proficiency. Four skills are tested: Listening, Structure, Reading, and Writing. In the near future, Speaking will be added and Structure dispensed with. The test itself takes approximately four hours including the (required) computer tutorial.
What does it mean to say that the TOEFL is a "computer-adaptive" test?
Both Listening and Structure are computer-adaptive. This means that the questions are served up according to the level of the test-taker. A person's level is determined as follows: if one answers a question correctly, a harder question is asked, conversely, if one's answer is incorrect, the following question will be easier. In this way, with a relatively few number of questions (compared to the old paper-test), the computer determines one's TOEFL score. In this way, each person receives a personally tailored TOEFL test with the computer adjusting to the level of the test-taker's performance.
Is an essay required?
Yes, a 30 minute essay is required which may be hand-written or directly typed. The essay score counts for half of the total Section 2 Structure-Writing score.
Where can I find a test center in my area?
Test centers are listed in the TOEFL Information Bulletin or on the TOEFL web site
www.toefl.org.
How do I register for a TOEFL test?
There are three ways to register for the TOEFL: Call Candidate Services at 1-800-468-6335, register online at www.toefl.org, or register locally at a regional registration center.
How often may I take the test?
The TOEFL test may be taken once during each calendar month. In other words, if you take the TOEFL on any day in January, you must wait until February to take it again.
Should I guess if I don’t know the answer?
On the Listening and Structure sections, you should eliminate the incorrect answers, and then guess, but you should not use a “guess answer” to mark quickly without really thinking about the choices. On the Reading section, you should eliminate the incorrect answers, and then guess, but if you run out of time at the end, you can use a “guess answer” to mark quickly and complete the section.
What is a good score on the computer-based TOEFL?
Each school or agency has its own standard. As a comparative guide, many colleges in the US require 217 with a minimum of 4 on the essay section. However, you need to check with schools or agencies directly to confirm their TOEFL score requirements.
Will I see my scores when I complete the test? When will I get my official score reports and for how long are these valid?
You will see a range of possible scores when you finish your test. Your official score is not available immediately because your essay must be scored. The range is calculated, assuming that you receive either the lowest or the highest possible score on the essay, along with the scores you earned on the other sections of the test. You will receive your official score reports two weeks after your test, if you type your essay on the computer. You will receive your official score reports five weeks after your test, if you handwrite your essay. TOEFL scores are considered valid for two years. After that time, most schools and agencies will not accept the score.
Why should you take the TOEFL and when is it required?
Universities in North America require international students whose mother tongue is not English to complete an English proficiency test called the TOEFL (Test Of English as a Foreign Language) to determine if they can function in an English teaching environment.
Taking the TOEFL is a necessary step for any non US or Canadian educated student who wants to study at a North American university. It is also increasingly required from other educational institutions throughout the world, as well as a desired or mandatory job qualification.
Student Visas!
In order to qualify for a student visa, you must be enrolled in a program that leads to the attainment of a specific educational or vocational objective. To be enrolled in such a program, universities require that you obtain a specified score on the TOEFL. You must also maintain a full-time course load, as determined by each university.
For how long is my TOEFL score valid?
Your TOEFL score is valid for only two years. In other words, two years after you take your TOEFL, your score will be deleted from the official TOEFL database, and TOEFL will not send you another report of your score. If you still have a copy of your original score, you can ask the university whether they will accept it, but most universities will not accept a copy from you; they require a score sent directly from TOEFL.
What is a good score on the TOEFL?
The highest score on the paper TOEFL is 677. The highest score on the computer TOEFL is 300. Most people now still use the paper TOEFL scores, even though most students take the computer TOEFL.
The score that you need depends on the university that you want to go to; you will need to contact the university to find out. In general, however, the score requirements range from 133 to 250 (CBT scoring) or 450 to 600 (PBT scoring).
Some universities will tell you that they don't have a minimum requirement; usually these universities are the best ones, such as Stanford or Harvard. However, even though they don't have a "requirement," most of the people who go to these universities have TOEFL scores from 267 to 300. Many Test Magic students have TOEFL scores higher than 270.
